Admissions

At Civano Community School our students learn to be positive citizens in our society through a diverse way of experiences. Students interact and collaborate, problem solve, take into account their questioning skills, and are guided by expert, caring faculty and staff members.

If you are interested in joining the Civano K-8 Community make sure to first attend an informational meeting!

middlers with teacherCivano is proud to maintain their small class sizes and even ratios of boys and girls in each grade level.  Because this is a priority for us we do have a waiting list to enter each year and have meetings for interested families.

We hold mandatory prospective family meetings three times a year. We vary up the day and time, so that someone from each participating family can attend. Paperwork for lottery participation is handed out at the end of each informational meeting. This is an adult only meeting. We do love kids, but this is a time for adult family members to learn about the school. We look forward to seeing you!

After attending a meeting we hold a Lottery at the beginning of March. Depending on how many openings are available and where your name is on the waiting list you will be contacted if your child’s name was selected.

Having a child already attending Civano does not guarantee a spot of incoming students. It does how ever raise your name on the waitlist.

If you missed the lottery and are interested in getting your child on our wait list, please call our school office: 879-1702.

What Sets Civano Apart and Is It Right For My Family?

  • Civano has a progressive approach to education that appeals to families who want their kids to be excited about school and learning. Our families have a high regard for education; many parents themselves are educators. Parents who choose Civano are oftentimes self-starters, critical thinkers, and involved community members—people who think off the page and are willing to explore alternatives.
  • Civano parents are open and confident in exploring high-quality alternative means of education that can feel new or strange at times. We don’t give grades. We don’t give many tests and we deliberately de-emphasize assessments that compare one student’s progress with that of another. We encourage students to make mistakes and to learn from them. We encourage students to sit with a problem, to stew and to persevere.
  • Mixed-age classrooms and integrated thematic instruction are central to our school. We have stayed true to our founders’ intent. Respect for the individual learner and respect for childhood (including time to play) remain cornerstones of our mission.
  • There is a strong sense of community at Civano. Parent volunteers are vital to the unique learning environment at Civano. While some parents help in the classrooms directly, others are involved in the life of the school according to their own specific talents and interests. In the past, parents have helped with the kitchen, graphic design, cinematography, construction, office organization, fundraising, community advocacy, as field trip chaperones, and so much more. Each Civano School family is asked to volunteer each year to support the school community. Parents who choose Civano enjoy being part of a strong community.

How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in Civano Community K-8 School. We hope to make the inquiry and application process straight-forward, inclusive, and accessible. There are several steps for a family to take in order to become part of our learning community. Please feel free to contact us with questions at any time during the process.

The lottery for the 2017-18 school year is complete.

Civano is proud to maintain their small class sizes and even ratios of boys and girls in each grade level; ranging from 12-14 per grade. [Please note: classrooms are mixed levels K; 1/2; 3/4; 5/6; 7/8. To clarify: 12 would be one grade level + and additional 12 for the other level totaling 24 per grade]  Because this is a priority for us, we often have a waiting list to enter each year and have meetings for interested families.

In order to join our community we ask everyone to attend a meeting to learn about our different teaching philosophy and teaching styles.

After attending a meeting we hold a Lottery in February (February 28, 2018). Depending on how many openings are available and where your name is on the waiting list you will be contacted if your child’s name was selected.

*Having a sibling already attending Civano does not guarantee a spot for incoming students. It will however put your incoming child on the top of the waitlist.

If you missed the information nights or lottery and are interested in getting your child on our wait list, please carefully read all philosophical information and values statement on our website to make sure Civano would be a good fit for your child. Then, fill out and drop off the wait list form in the front office.  If you have further questions, please call the front office at 520-879-1702.
