Admissions

At Civano Community School our students learn to be positive citizens in our society through a diverse way of experiences. Students interact and collaborate, problem solve, take into account their questioning skills, and are guided by expert, caring faculty and staff members.

If you are interested in joining the Civano K-8 Community make sure to first attend an informational meeting!

middlers with teacherCivano is proud to maintain their small class sizes and even ratios of boys and girls in each grade level.  Because this is a priority for us we do have a waiting list to enter each year and have meetings for interested families.

We hold mandatory prospective family meetings three times a year. We vary up the day and time, so that someone from each participating family can attend. Paperwork for lottery participation is handed out at the end of each informational meeting. This is an adult only meeting. We do love kids, but this is a time for adult family members to learn about the school. We look forward to seeing you!

After attending a meeting we hold a Lottery at the beginning of March. Depending on how many openings are available and where your name is on the waiting list you will be contacted if your child’s name was selected.

Having a child already attending Civano does not guarantee a spot of incoming students. It does how ever raise your name on the waitlist.

If you missed the lottery and are interested in getting your child on our wait list, please call our school office: 879-1702.

How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in Civano Community K-8 School. We hope to make the inquiry and application process straight-forward, inclusive, and accessible. There are several steps for a family to take in order to become part of our learning community. Please feel free to contact us with questions at any time during the process.

The lottery for the 2017-18 school year will be held March 1st, 2017.

Civano is proud to maintain their small class sizes and even ratios of boys and girls in each grade level; ranging from 12-14 per grade. [Please note: classrooms are mixed levels K/1; 2/3; 4/5; 6/7/8. To clarify: 12 would be one grade level + and additional 12 for the other level totalling 24 per grade]  Because this is a priority for us, we often have a waiting list to enter each year and have meetings for interested families.

FAQs

If I already have a child attending Civano, does my younger student (s) automatically enter?

  • Not necessarily. All in district incoming students of currently enrolled siblings do get priority dependent on space.   If there are more interests than spots available a lottery is put in place.
  • In most cases, it is a kindergarten opening that is being sought. In the past, there has always been adequate number of spaces for incoming in district siblings.

Do we have to attend all three information meetings?

  • No, you only need to attend one meeting. Each meeting offers the same information, just at different times to accommodate different working families schedules.

Is there a wait list?

  • For most grade levels there is not a wait list. Majority of enrollment is kindergarten.
  • If there is a wait list, it usually is minimal. Unfortunately, our attrition rate is small, and chances of enrolling mid-year are difficult.

Will I be called if my name is on the top of the wait list?

  • No, we will call you if we have an opening  for your child.

What are the lottery tiers and how many are there?

Four Lottery Selection Tiers

Level 1:

  • Civano Employees

  • Siblings of currently enrolled 1st-8th grade students (non-open enrollment students)

  • Students residing within Civano Community Neighborhood, Vail School District (East of Houghton/ Irvington Rd. to Drexel)

  • Students of full-time district employees (including Sodexo, but excludes all substitutes and coaches at other sites)

Level 2:

  • Students residing within the Houghton Corridor [Sierra Morado/Mesquite Ranch Neighborhood] (East of Houghton/ Drexel to Poorman)

Level 3:

  • Students residing within Vail School District, but outside of Civano Community Neighborhood or Houghton corridor.

Level 4:

  • Students residing outside the Vail School District [with open enrollment forms]
  • Students of families that did not attend any informational night or did not fill lottery draw paperwork.

If an immediate family member works in the Vail School District, do we get automatic enrollment or priority?

  • You do get priority in the tier 1 lottery draw

Does our name remain on the wait list, or do we need to apply each year?

  • No. Each year our list is reset to give families fair opportunity

If we are called with a spot, is it mandatory to attend?

  • No. Families have 3 days to decide if they will take the spot or pass it on to the next family on the wait list.
